66 years ago a stable fire at
Braeside in Victoria claimed the life of Violet Murrell as she tried to rescue her beloved
horse Garryowen - alas they both perished. This legend has captured the hearts of
horselovers, and each year we see Australia's top Equestrienne's compete in the
prestigious event known as The Garryowen Perpetual Trophy. The event is judged by
six individual judges who are each looking at a specific part of the horse and rider
combination. Each of the judges carefully observe each combination and write down
their scores. Without the benefit of this frst hand observation, it would difficult
for an spectator to make any predictions about the likely winner and placegetters. For
this reason I have not made much comment about the performance of each of the
competitors. There were 27 contestants in this
years event - well down on some of the large fields of 'yesteryear'. I can remember
coming to watch 106 competitors take part in the late 80's. One of the Stewards told
me that she could recall a year when 150 riders took part. Perhaps in these previous
years the riders did not need to 'qualify' at the country Agricultural shows. I am
sure that this requirement, and the necessary commitment of time and money, would be quite
difficult for many - who would otherwise love to ride in the Garryowen.
Today's weather made for a perfect 'Garryowen day'.
Warm - just a gentle breeze, and no threat of rain (which forecasters said we would
get). The ringside presentation was splendid and certainly added to the wonderful
atmosphere. The dress code for all of the officials was up to their expectations of
the competitors - formal and grand. They all looked so elegant.
I have tried to capture the spirit and detail of the event,
and have included several photographs of each competitor as they work their way through
each phase of the competition - I hope you enjoy the event as much as I did. |
