Above and Below: is Number 347 and a hushed sense of
anticipation filled the huge Chapin arena. Even if you were unaware of the huge
reputation of the next rider - you would still have known that the crown were expecting
something special from this horse. Broere Jazz is the stallion that has brought his
rider Tineke Bartels out of retirement - so he must be special. When taking in the
image of this wonderful horse, you are reminded that the top horses have a presence that
if difficult to put into words. Jazz is gorgeous and he is in almost perfect self
carriage at most times. He was one of the few to step out spaciously in the rein
back and forward sequence - which is so difficult and the true test of a horse being on
the riders' aids. It was an exciting test with wonderful expression. I loved
this horse's energetic knee action, it adds so much to the artistic appeal. The
'down side' of this test was some resistance into the bridle which did spoil the
opportunity for top marks. The horse is just 11 so has time to improve this aspect
of his work. He scored 65.88% - I am sure that this would have been disappointing as
on a good day this horse would be very hard to beat. They missed out on a ride in
the Special and Freestyle competitions and finished 29th today. The pictures tell a
thousand words about the balance and poise of Broere Jazz.
Above
and Below: Number 326 is Richard John Davison and Ballaseyr Royal - a most
attractive type of horse which was formerly campaigned by Heike Holstein from Ireland.
Richard did a very nice test with no errors that I was able to observe. The
judging of his test was a little disappointing and inconsistent. Three of the
judges gave him very close scores 67.40%, 67.60% and 67.60%. Ernst Holst had them
well down on 60.80% which denied them a ride in the Special which may have given them a
chance through to the Kür.
This situation serves to confirm the fact that all judges see a particular
performance differently and there is not much that can be done about it. I did like
this test and felt that Richard would have been within his rights to wonder why!
They finished in 28th place- this highest placed rider from Great Britain.
Number 355 - Balagur ridden by Alexandra Korelova for Russia. Balagur
is a 12 yo stallion - for me his paces lacked the quality and flow of some of the other
horses which ended up well down. This combination were last to go on Wednesday and I
am sure they were thankful for the cooler conditions. There were no real mistakes
but I did find the score a little hard to understand. Elizabeth McMullen from Canada
awarded 69..40% and I felt that a close to 70% mark was very generous. They ended in
27th place.
Number 317 was Nathalie Zu Sayn Wittgenstein on her elegant 12 yo Hessen
gelding Fantast S by Frisbee. They drew 12 midday on Wednesday to ride and
managed a very nice test. Nathalie managed to avoid the mistakes that bring the
marks down - the Piaffe was modest and to gain the marks vital for a top 25 finish this
area of the Grand Prix must be secure and polished. They scored 66.80% for 26th
place - very disappointing to be so close to 25th and a ride in the Special.
