Number
312 was Ashley Holzer riding for Canada, on her 12 yo Dutch bred stallion Imperioso (NL)
by Anky Van Grunsven's former mount Cocktail. Ashley drew the least favourite riding
time - first on. The test did display some 'first rider' nerves - and who could
blame them in this big electric atmosphere. The piaffe was modest, with some
swinging and irregular steps. The canter looked tense and lacked the looseness that
the judges would have looking to see. The canter pirouettes were unbalances -
particularly to the right when the horse's hind legs cam too far under the body and he got
'jammed'. The left pirouette was better. Ashley scored 64.72 which put them in
38th place.
Above
and Below: Number 302 is our super showman Heath Ryan on GV Stirling
Stilton. So often ... someone's misfortune, is the good fortune of another.
This was the case when our team member Kristy Oatley-Nist had soundness problems with her
outstanding horse Rosemont Wallstreet and Heath stepped in as the Australian Team reserve
rider to take her place. Heath gave it his best shot - just as we all knew he would, and
put together a great test. There were some swinging steps in the Piaffe which would
have been costly. A highlight was a really super extended canter. The large
contingent of Aussies in the audience showed their support and approval for Heath - he was
the highest scoring Aussie at the Games - a great acknowledgment of his role in the
sport. They scored 64.96% and placed 37th in the competition.
We all wish Kristy and Wallstreet the best. We hope to see youout in
competition again soon.
Number
338 - Glenstern, ridden by Oded Shimoni for Israel. Glenstern is a lovely round type
and it was a pleasing test. This 14 yo gelding is by Kaiserstern which would suggest
European breeding - but no details were given. There were no real mistakes but
overall the test lacked the polish of the higher scoring performances. The finished
with a percentage of 65.20% which gave them 36th place.
Number
308 is the big grey Hermes 89, ridden by Andea John for Austria. Hermes 89 is a 13
yo gelding and his breeding was not disclosed with the information on the start list.
For me this test was generously marked as the first halt was progressive. The
judges would have been enthused by the extended trot which followed - it was very nice.
The Piaffe was quite weak but Passage quite nice. The extended walk appeared
hurried for my judgment. In the 2 times sequence they missed the first change.
The extended canter was of very nice quality. I would have been pleased with
this mark of 65.36% which gave them 35th placing. I am sure that all of the rider
would have been aiming for a ride in the Special. It was not to be for Andrea.
