Number 339 is James Joseph Connor who rides for Italy on his lovely chestnut
High Flyer. This horse is a 15 yo Dutch bred gelding by Wolfgang (who's semen is available in Australia)
High Flyer had a wonderful rhythm in the Passage but a weak Piaffe and as this part of the
GP test is such a big mark earner the results have reflected this weakness. There
was a loss of balance which affected the placement of the canter pirouettes and these
faults do affect the marks considerable. 60.80 would have been disappointing as it
kept them well down in 60th place.
Number 358 Sylvia Ikle for Sweden on her Westfalian stallion Romario.
At just 10 years of age he was one of the 'babies' at this competition. Romario
showed his youth and inexperience by rearing in the Piaffe - not a good look. Sylvia
was the only rider to make an error of course - she missed the two times changes and went
straight into the canter pirouettes on the centre line. To be able to pull off a
good test this combination needed a lot of luck to go their way and they did not get it
today - they would have disappointed, but they have still got time to improve as they
surely will. 60.92% for 59th place.
Number 369 was Yuriy Kovshov and his elegant bay Welkome. Welcome is an
8 yo Holsteiner Stallion and for me he showed his youth in his immature lack of strength.
He was not able to get his hind legs underneath his body and sit in the
Piaffe/Passage - this quality must be present to draw the big marks. In 4 years this
horse will only be 12 and will probably be a lot better (if it is still sound!) They
scored 61.84% for 58th placing.
Number 343 Yoshikata Serimachi from Japan on Rosseau 28, his 19 year old bay
which is owned by the Crane Riding Club. Rosseau 28 appeared to have a great
temperament but was beyond being truly competitive at this, the highest level of
international competition. The Passage was barely more than a collected trot and most of
the work was done with the horse's back hollow. He was not ridden up to the bit and
the changes were swinging. The horse's experience and willingness allowed them to
score into the 60's. 61.88% was a little higher than I thought they would score and
they ended in = 56th place.
Above & Below is our 'honourary Aussie' Number 349,
Kalista Field on Jamahl, her 11 yo gelding by Jaguar who stood for a while in Australia,
before going across the Tasman. Kallista's test moved off positively and into a
lovely extended trot, but I felt that Jamahl did not have the beautiful rhythm and flow
that many of the higher marking horses demonstrated in the half passes. The canter
changes were lovely - in particular the one times. They scored 61.88 for = 56th
place
Number 361 Susanne Geilen and Chasmir from Sweden. The 16 yo Chasmir is
a very elegant horse with good positive head carriage. The two times changes were a
highlight, they were easy and had a lovely jump - mistakes spoiled the 1's. The
canter pirouettes were spoiled by grounding steps and the final piaffe was spoiled by the
horses misunderstanding - he thought that the rider said stop. They scored 62.60 for
55th place.
