Number
314 Cesar Parra on his 12 yo Oldenberg Gelding Robinson 94, for Columbia. While the
side line angle is not the best view for the half passes - Robinson's work in this part of
his test was very flowing and attractive. However the canter work had too many
errors and the 2.s lost their sequence. While the ones were correct they lost
impulsion and with it the ability to score a top mark. The Piaffe was laboured with
a loss of regularity. they scored 62.64% for 54th placing.
Number
307 - Stefan Peter on Acartenango for Austria. This is a very nice 15 yo stallion
who's breeding was not mentioned. This horse showed lovely transitions from Piaffe
toPassage and then to walk. His frame was light and up and made for a
pleasing picture. There was a serious loss of balance and rhythm in the Schaukel
which seemed to upset the flow of the following work. The canter had some problems
in particular the 1 times changes. The horse broke in the final extended trot.
There was a lot to like about much of this test. 62.80% for 53rd place would
have been down on this combinations expectations.
Number
337 - Welt Adel, a 10 yo Holsteiner gelding was ridden for Ireland by Heike Holstein.
I loved this flamboyant chestnut with the four white stockings but unfortunately
the horse lost engagement in many parts of the test and this allowed some mistakes to
creep in and diminished the crispness of the performance. The canter pirouettes
became a little deep - but it was a lovely harmonious picture, and 62.84% gave
them 52nd place.
Number
327 was Gambrinus and Peter Storr who rode for Great Britain. Gambinus is a 11 yo
Hanovarian gelding by Grosso Z and is owned by Peter. The horse lacked enough
forward inclination in many parts of the test - in particular the canter changes needed to
cover more ground. The rein back was messy and not positive. The piaffe was weak and
at times the horse dragged his hind toes in the sand. While I have mentioned the faults
that lost the marks it was a pleasant and enjoyable performance. 63.04% put this
combination into 51st place.
Number
328 - another rider for Great Britain - Instaberg and Emile Faurie. This is a
magnificent 12 yo horse and the breeding details were not included. I loved his
frame and ability to carry weight on his hind legs - I think the pictures show this
quality. Poor Instaberg seemed to be very
troubled by the hot Spanish weather - and coming from a very much cooler climate this
would be understandable. With his neck while with foamy sweat, it was hard to
imagine that we saw his best. Such a pity as this horse had truly fantastic paces -
in particular the canter. They scored 63.16% for 50th placing.
Above
and below - our own Rachael Sanna and Yardley Aphrodite - Number 301 on the
program. Rachael's ride came in the worst heat of the day, I guess that we
would have been one of the countries who would be a little acclimatised to the hot, humid
and steamy weather. As a spectator it was unpleasant, so I had a great deal of
sympathy for the riders in their heavy jackets and tight riding pants. Rachael is a 'cool
customer' and took this in her stride. I have noticed when watching Rachael that she is a
'master' at warming up her horses, and she kept focused enough to employ her proven
techniques of half passes and lateral work to supple and soften in readiness for the
judges assessment. The half passes were flowing and accurate, but the weakness in
Piaffe would have cost marks - particularly as the transitions are also so much a part of
the make up of the big scoring tests. There were mistakes in the one times changes
which also has a very negative effect at this level. I thought that Aphrodite's work
was a little less that I have seen her work - which was a pity for the many Aussies who
had come to cheer on our team.
