Daronmont Technologies Young Rider Challenge - Final Round.
by Berni Saunders
This competition runs over two days - the first round is included on Page 2 of this report.  The top three horses go through to the final round.  They first ride their own horse then take the ride on the other two horses in the top three.   They only have 10 minutes to get used to the feel of the horse and to acclimatise themselves to the 'buttons'.  As this competition is conducted at Prix St. Georges (the first level of International competition) it is very demanding - even on a horse that you know well.  Riding a new horse at this level is very demanding and taxing even for an older and more experienced rider.

The Young Riders do not have the years - therefore the experience to have ridden lots of horses at this level so it is a very telling test of their horsemanship skills and riding ability.

It is also very demanding and taxing on the horses - three Prix St. Georges rides in short succession - it was easy to see that towards the end the horses were tired and 'over it'.

Congratulations must go to the three top Young Riders - they all did a very good job and no doubt have a great future in the sport of Dressage.  It is very likely that one or all three of them will represent Australia at some stage in the future.

Joanna Clarke on Argentile Shamada - this horse was a little sensitive and did not always react quite as his two guest riders would have liked.

Brett enters the indoor arena for his final ride on
Jo's horse Silvermunda.  This horse can be a little noise sensitive, but he looked tired and less reactionary - a good thing under the circumstances

The winner of the 2003
Daronmont Technologies Young Rider Challenge
is Joanna Clarke from Victoria.  He wonderful horse Silvermunda was also the highest scoring horse.  This would also be a thrill for Judy McKay who was responsible for the horse's early training and so rideability.  He did a great job with all three riders.

Very close runner-up was Renee Pedretti on
Sunbury Lodge Thomas.  Renee has done all the work on this horse herself - well done Renee and Thomas.

Deborah McNicol acknowledges this fantastic achievement.
The prize for this event is a trip to Aachen in Germany.  This will give Jo the opportunity to see the best riders in the world, the best horses and to further her knowlegdge and experience.

We look forward to seeing the impact on her riding and training ability that this wonderful opportunity will have.

Daronmont Technologies is a very generous sponsor and supporter of the sport of Dressage in Australia.  This event has provided a year round incentive to Young Riders to work hard and be seriously considered for such a valuable prize and pivotal personal opportunity to fast track their learning curve.   The event is sure to go from strength to strength.
