got off to a gloomy and wet start. For months we have all been praying for rain and
it would certainly have seemed rather misplaced to resent the much needed downpour.
When I arrived on Friday morning, Allan Bruno - the Manager of the Werribee Centre, was
sweeping water away from the Trade Village area to ensure that people would not be
deterred from walking about. The Grand Prix competition was re-scheduled to start about half an hour later to allow for some extra work to be done to drain arena 1 during the lunchbreak. Luckily further heavy rain held off and this competition was ridden in very acceptable conditions. The arenas at Werribee Park seem to drain very well and seldom cause problems from Melbourne's variable weather conditions. We are so very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility. The rain did seem to keep people away from the spectator areas and the trade village and it was hoped by all that conditions would improve in this regard. Friday saw the first round of the 'Daronmont Technologies Young Rider Challenge take place indoors. With a trip to Aachen in Germany on offer to the winner - young Dressage riders who had qualified to be part of this prestigious event were keen to do well and advance through to the second round. The dim light on Friday morning made the round one indoor pictures difficult to capture - but these few will help relive some of the action. This prestigious event is conducted under the rules of the FEI as it at Prix St Georges level. This is a real test of the riders' skill as it can take many years to ride a good Prix St Georges test. The top three riders must then exchange horses and ride this demanding work on a horse they have only had 10 minutes to get to know. The two Advanced classes and also the two Novice classes were also conducted today and the Novice classes showed that we are commencing the early work on much better horses who have for the most part been purpose bred for the job. |

 Kathryn Thornton on the 'personality' horse Dutchboy by Dutchman. I spoke to Katherine later and she was delighted with her ride as she has only been with the horse for a month or so, and she loves him. |
 A previous winner of this event - Gitte Donvig on Donatello - who is a charming gelding owned by Cheryl Hook. Gitte did a great job and showed some very nice work. |

 Joanna Clarke on her imported gelding Guy Noir. This horse is capable but this test was spoilt by tension and lack of concentration. Jo - known for a good sense of humour - did well and kept her cool. |
 Justine Greer riding Isle of Hinton who was formerly ridden by Charlotte Pedersen. He is always a gentleman and Justine did a lovely test. |

 Brooke Rumble on Judy Hebel's Thoroughbred gelding Raising Kentucky. There were some moments when this lovely horse showed his talent, but tension spoilt much of the test. Better luck in the future Brooke. |
 Brett Davey from NSW on the first horse bred by Val d'Argent Stud in NSW - Argentile Shamada. It was a polished and forward test with very few mistakes. |

 Victorian rider Renee Pedretti on Sunbury Lodge Thomas. This horse a has a little bit of Percheron blood - and this gives him the substance and character to do well at Dressage. Renee has done some work overseas and won the 2002 Dietmer Specht trophy. Renee rode very well and her background shows in her position and effective seat. |
 Jo Clarke from Bolinda Vale here in Victoria on her
fantastic Thoroughbred Silvermunda by Starmunda. I first 'met' this horse in SA in
1997 when he was ridden in the FEI World Dressage Challenge Australasian final by his
former owner - legend - Mrs. Judy McKay from Boggabilla in Qld. She would have
been very proud of her boy today - Jo did a great job and showed that she has done some
great work at home since taking on the horse a couple of years ago. |
