With
the international interest in Young Dressage Horse classes gathering more and more
momentum, it is no surprise that it has been included on the program of both Stat and
Nationional Dressage Championships in Australia. Everyone agrees that it is a great
and innovative addition to the program - for lots of reasons - but the most
important aspect is that it allows us to assess quality and future potential BEFORE sire
and dam are too old for more to be produced. Before Young Horse classes, breeders
had to wait for at least 8 years before the horses he bred would be doing work that anyone
would consider worthy of mention. The Young Horse classes are not judged so much on
accuracy and correct figures, but on good training, rideability and potential to improve
with training and the likelihood of the horse having what it takes to go on to the higher
levels. The horse will not lose lost of marks for a shy or a very nice circle that
is a little too large or small. Everyone agrees that this is a great way to foster interest and introduce more people to the sport of Dressage. While the young horse class at the 2003 Victorian Dressage Festival was not a huge one - the quality of entries was excellent. All riders should be congratulated on getting their young horses ready for such a big event. |

![]() Jaybee Amanda (by Aachimedes) and Reiner Kramer make a very pleasing picture. Reiner - who spent many years training dressage riders in Malaysia, really clicks with this talented mare. The pair took out the Novice Championships along with this Young Horse Championship - Congratulations Reiner. |
![]() Zorro by the frozen semen Dutch stallion Zeoliet was nicely ridden by Hayley Gilbert for a great result. He was bred by Richard Maidment. |
|||||
![]() Petite Judy Gronn on her petite and obliging mare Belcam Carob. This horse is by the imported stallionContango ll, who seems to stamp his progeny with a 'can do' attitude. Judy has done very well in the short time she has been with Carob and says she has enjoyed every minute. The pair are trained by Hayley Beresford. |
![]() CJP Donner Kohl and Jenny Bray - Jenny has had great success with Kilof McOhl (Danish) horses - notably her FEI champion Kormoran McOhl. Jenny is a talented rider and I am sure this lovely jet black youngster will continue her success. |
|||||
![]() Delwood Amy and Kaye Champion who live near Canberra. This mare is by the Oldenberg stallion Sir Alfie. Kay is well known for her riding and training ability, so we are sure to see more of Amy as her training progresses and she get out to competitions. |
![]() Glenwood Gretel and Karen French. This well conformed mare by Dutchman (Imp) has been very successful in her breed classes and dressage competitions. |
|||||
![]() Rimini Park Babylon and Nadine O'Sullivan from Myrtleford in Victoria's high country. Nadine breeds some lovely young horses, and she has a high opinion of Babylon. |
