A special attraction of the day came in the form of a light hearted
Shetland Pony race. Leading Melbourne trainer - Lee Freedman was a major part of the
event - not as the trainer of the winner - but as the race caller. The clerk of the
course horse was the ever popular chestnut Super Impose with his talented young jockey
Lyle Plumb (just out of his apprenticeship, I am told)! The unmounted steward was
the wonderful 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew, who was retired quite recently, due to
injury. It was such a thrill to see these marvellous past winners here at beautiful
Eliza Park.
The five starters in the race
adopted all of the formalities the keen racegoers would expect to see. There was a
pre-race parade and the ponies were introduced. Super Impose was very keen to be
part of the action, a looked to be feeling confident about his chances with today's
opposition.
Brew was wondering what he had
done to miss out on the fun of the race, but was consoled by a pick of the lovely grass
trackside. |
