The Elementary level has always been a pivotal stage in a horse's training.  It is the first level at which we see collection - albeit at a 'baby' stage, and the first level at which we see two track work - the Shoulder in and the Travers (which is really a half pass ridden on a straight line)  The horse must be demonstrating a degree of balance and self carriage, in order to perform these movements in accordance with the requirements of the rule book.

Horses that lack the special gifts of a true 'dressage horse' will seldom excel beyond this stage of education.  Fortunately as this is a championship competition all of the combinations had to qualify to be here and most of the tests at Elementary level showed quality, expression and a talent for dressage.

Above is Weltklasse the imported gelding by Welt Hit 1. 
I was not able to get a picture at this competition and as this stunning horse was the Elementary Champion I have included pictures taken at the Ulf Müller Masterclass at the 2002 Dressage With the Stars event in December 2002.

Lesley Anne Taylor from South Australia purchased two horses from PSI and Ulf Müller mentioned his particular liking of this horse's way of going and attitude.  Well done Lesley-Anne and Weltklasse

Above -  Pasa Doble, another import -  by Jet Set D - he too confirms the quality of young horse now entering the sport and the commitment of owners to make sure that they have the best quality horses to justify the huge training effort involved in the sport.  This horse is really one of my favourites.  He is owned by Vicky Roux and so nicely ridden by Kate Boyes.  He has definitely improved as his education has progressed.

Dr. Kerry Mack on her outstanding young stallion Mayfield Pzazz - another import proving that Aussies are getting serious about good horses and good riding.  Pzazz won the Champion of Champions at the 2002 Dressage with the Stars and will soon leave to take part in the World Championships.

Just about to get on for their ride in the 3E test is Susan Ogilvy and Fuerst.  Susan trains and rides with Kerry Mack and
loves sharing horse interests with her.
Fuerst is a TB and a striking individual with lots of personality.

A beautiful Dutch bred gelding by Salute.
Kate bought the horse as a stallion and has gelded him in order to focus on his dressage future.  He has great ability and should progress very well with such a good rider to get him going with correct basic training and a solid foundation.

Marg England - a very popular Victorian personality and hard working for the sport.   We all felt for Marg and Rob Clay who very recently lost their wonderful grey horse Tjandamurra to colic.  He was entered to take part in the Inter 1 and PSG at this comp.  We all feel your loss and trust you have happier days ahead. Marg was at the Champs for all 4 days and, as her way, she organised the catering to perfection.
