Open Hack - Preliminary Round
Highlights - Page 2
The consistent quality of the horses at this year's Hidden
Valley Championships speaks volumes about the knowledge that exists within the sport of
hacking. The top professionals are experts in choosing the right horse and working
out a feeding program to perfect the muscle tone and coat. Add to this, hours
of grooming and training which it is hoped will produce the end product - a
magnificent show horse.
For many, there is
nothing quite like a beautiful horse, and it was a visual feast here at Hidden Valley.
Tidings
and his owner/rider J. Bell always command attention. Another very tall and leggy
thoroughbred - he oozes elegance. Tidings worked very well and is always up there in
the top placings.
Gary
Beaton on Lemrac's Dancing Poet. This horse was the 2002 Hidden Valley Open Hack
Champion - could he do it again. Poet is owned by Gary and Brian Scholes and the
horse has delighted them with his consistent performances which have made him a national
star of the show ring. Poet did not work quite as joyfully as I have seen in the
past - perhaps the heat of yesterday has left him flat. They went through to the
final with the top 10 after this round.
Caro
Wagner on her lovely chestnut WS Applause. This horse worked very well but found it
hard to beat the flash looks of his new stablemate WS Black Label. Peter Wagner did
a great job as the groom and took care of Black Label while Applause worked out - well
done Peter.
Sequel
and Dale Plumb are a combination with that 'look at me' quality. A magnificent tall
bay thoroughbred, Sequel has a long list of impressive wins behind him. He is a very
nice moving horse with a soft and fluent way of going.
Rhonda
Hunt on her love chestnut Occasion. Occasion has been part of her family right
throughout his life and this must make his success a great deal sweeter for her.
Rhonda's brother who lives in Tasmania bred the horse and Rhonda had a share in the
syndicate that raced him. When he finished racing he came to Victoria and Rhonda has
taken him to the top level as a show horse. Rhonda has a sense of style and this eye
for detail has made her a very successful show competitor.
