Tony and
Shani Hodges work as a 'small hands-on' team and are based near
Cranbourne which has become an area with an extremely high
concentration
of horse owners both hobbyists and professionals.
They understand that
whether a horse is kept purely for pleasure or is to become part
of a 'professional team' the early experiences and education
will have a huge bearing upon a successful out come for the
owner.
The Hodges are based on a
small but well appointed property just off the
Westernport Highway in Langwarrin (near Cranbourne) ... it is easy to find and
very assessable
from Melbourne's major road system.
The property has been set
up to make horses 'feel at home' with the big airy barn, which
is a testament to the 'old fashioned horseman's' well considered
design. The 10 horse stable block is a real feature of the
property and was built about 50 years ago and was part of the
original farm estate that has now been subdivided. It is was
built to meet the standards of a time when the horses in the
area were a much valued part of the farm work force. Tony says
the barn has a high gable roof with an upstairs hay loft which
provides great insulation from the summer sun and the structure
is quite cosy in the colder months. The barn is always
comfortable and I have built post rail yards adjoining the ‘work
side of the barn, so that the horses are free to move about and
get a change of scenery or protection from the elements. I have
also constructed 6 larger, grassed day yards and the manēge is
in the middle of this work area. The horses seem to settle in
well and are very interested in the things that go on around
them for most of the day.
