Around 3,000
racegoers in holiday mode ventured to Stony Creek on Saturday for the second meeting for
the season. Club secretary Neil Bainbridge was
delighted with the turnout and said, "although the cup meeting in March is the
pinnacle of our season, I can't remember when we last drew a crowd like this."
The feature event of the eight race programme was the JJ
Boag Memorial Hcp taken out by the locally trained Lanney. The six year old mare was
having her first start for Stony Creek trainer Paul Boag, who is the son of the late JJ
Boag as well as being the club's vice president.
Lanney, 5/1, carried 58 kg to victory and after being
positioned ideally in the run by Shane Tronerud proved too strong for outsider Canace with
Drummond Chase third.
Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths combined with Ivan
Culliver to take out the first two races with Poetic Pursuit and Command Line. Poetic
Pursuit by Rubiton out of an Our Poetic Prince dam missed the kick by three lengths but
was quickly hunted up to mid-field, eventually coming down the outside to score by 3/4
length. The three year old colt was having its first start and looks to have the ability
to contest stronger races in the future.
Culliver completed his treble with a nicely timed run on No
Foresight. The Sandra Borschmann trained mare tackled favourite Ebony Beauty in the
straight coming away for a comfortable three length win.
One young hoop who won't forget the day is seventeen year
old Ashley Jones. Under the eye of James Riley, Jones booted home his first winner aboard
Grange Hill in the class 4 handicap over a mile. Jones began race riding in 2000 after
spending four years with Riley on weekends and school holidays. Riley, who has fifteen in
work at his Caulfield stables said, "Ashley's track riding has improved significantly
over the past few months and today was reward for all the hard work he has put in." |
