Any
hopes that connections had of a dream debut in the " old dart " for Aussie flag
bearer, Logician, were left sunk in the mud of Sandown Park on Saturday, following the
running of the Weatherbys Scilly Isles Novices Chase over approx. 4100 metres.
Carrying 11 stone 6 pounds ( 72.6 kgs.), the
gelding struggled to find his feet on the heavy, foreign soil, finishing in fourth place,
some 48 lengths astern of Best Mate, who now goes into the forthcoming Cheltenham carnival
as one of the more fancied contenders for Festival fortune, but will not be contesting the
rich Cheltenham Gold Cup despite the emphatic victory.
Whilst Best Mate could not have been more
impressive, Logician didnt do too much in the way of making a good, first impression
on the locals. After bungling the first and third fences, he dropped out toward the rear
of the eight horse field, before making a mess of the twelfth obstacle and only plodding
home on the extremely heavy surface, one which was again under threat of not being raced
on due to rain.
Sandown Parks Director of Racing, Andrew
Cooper reported the course received about 5mm. of precipitation on the night preceding the
meeting, but was an insufficient amount to doom the programme to the same fate as the four
previous abandoned dates.
