Dual hemisphere breeding operation Vinery,
has witnessed plenty of action in the United States in recent weeks as sire acquisitions
More Than Ready and Trippi capture Group One, while Red Ransoms progeny continue to
storm the winners circle.
But attention quickly focused on Australia when exciting first crop
sire Vettori opened his stakes account courtesy of the Swettenham Stud owned Lands End at
Flemington on the weekend.
Lands End dictated terms throughout to record a 1-1/4 length win in the
Listed Concept Sports Stakes, notching his second win in four outings from a top class
field of three-year-olds for trainer Peter Hayes.
Regrettably, Swettenham's Australian representative, Adam Sangster, was
not on hand to see the win as he was in England to be with his mother, who is seriously
ill.
"Vettori quickly distinguished himself with three northern
hemisphere stakes winners from his first crop so were thrilled he is replicating his
success in Europe with a stakes winner here," said Vinery Australia bloodstock
manager Colm Santry.
"He by European champion two-year-old and champion sire
Machiavellian and he now has four individual stakes winners and two other stakes
performers in Unitaire and Singapore Boy," he said.
Vettori opened his black type progeny account when Toutzi, out of a
Bluebird mare, won the Listed Premio Alessandro Perrone in Rome. The filly is from
Vettoris first crop when he stood at Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard.
Then Hightori won the Prix Thomas Bryon at Saint-Cloud by 2-1/2 lengths
at his first campaign, returning this year to capture the Group Three Prix du Prince
d'Orange (2000m) at Longchamp in late September.
Trainer Philippe Demercastel will target the Group One Prix Ganay with
Hightori after he ran a very creditable fifth in the Arc de Triomphe.
Lady Vettori has won three stakes races and placed in the Group One
Prix Marcel Bousac.
Vettori has several promising three-year-olds including Spinnerman,
prepared by Michael Moroney at Flemington, and impressive trial winner Mustard, prepared
by John McNair at Gosford.
Another to watch for his Rosso Corsa, who is prepared by Dean Lawson
for Testa Rossas owner John Cappellin. This colt finished a half head second at
Kyneton on October 10 at only his second start.
Vettoris reputation in France is such that he provided the
sale-topper at Goffs France breeze-up sale with a colt knocked down to Singapore interests
for FF700,000.
He won the Poule dEssai des Poulains (1600m) at Longchamp and was
champion first crop French sire of 1999.
Vettoris 1999 season resulted in 136 mares pregnant at Vinery and
earlier this year his northern hemisphere season resulted 121 mares in foal at an
increased service fee at Newmarket.
