Belcam Stud - Hay Shed Fire
Press Release
-  5th December, 2002.
At about 1.30pm on Tuesday the 3rd December, a fire destroyed much of the Belcam Equestrian Centre in Biddaddaba, near Canungra in Queensland.

The fire started when a stack of hay combusted and even though it was found almost immediately, the fire was out of control within 5 minutes. The entire southern end of the complex is burnt down. Including about 1/3 of the indoor arena, feed & machinery shed, stables, tie-up area, tack & storage rooms and the office.    Eye witnesses confirm that it was a terrifying experience, with the heat and speed at which the fire was taking over, presenting the prospect of a much worse outcome for everything at Belcam.

Fortunately as the fire was during the day, the staff were able to evacuate the stables - but, with only seconds to spare!  No horses or people were injured.

Sadly, Ullie's partner Sue lost her beloved dog Harry, as he was trapped in the office and did not survive.

Nearly all records - both paperwork and computer, have been lost. Luckily the majority of the breeding records are held by the Belcam Breeding Manager and were not stored in the main office.

The  24 hours following the fire were a nightmare for all of the staff at Belcam. The reality of the tragedy and the impact of the loss is very tough very tough and the enormous work involved in re-establishing is just hitting home.

While the loss of the hay was not a first concern, it will impact the stud as time goes by as  much of the next twelve month supply was destroyed.  This will be very difficult to relace in the very serious drought conditions that all of Australia is experiencing.

Ulli & Sue would like to say thankyou to all the special friends and neighbours that have given or offered help.  Their concern and assistance is very much appreciated and will be remembered.

The management and staff are now focussing on getting Belcam Stud back on it’s feet and they need the help of all of those people who have had dealings with Belcam over the years.

As all of the records have been lost, it would greatly appreciated if you could help by completing the Contact Form attached, and forwarding it along with photocopies copies of any documentation you may have.
